The main character is complexes, and grows as the season unfolds (she does not stay woden, or cliché give it half a chance). Now the good, and there is so much more good to this show.

Really not all that horrible in the modern tv landscape, There is smoking tobacco, some mild dirty language, drinking, and lots of violince.

Yes there is some sexyness, but they do keep it pretty PG13. Young people may like this show if they enjoy early-season Supernatural adventures, but would rather see women at the center of the story. (It has a lot of frivolous, stylized, Buffy-esque violence, but no gore or jump-scares.) I would recommend it for preteens and younger teens, especially girls, who might be too young for similar genre shows with a grittier tone or more explicit content, such as later-season Supernatural, Lost Girl, or Grimm, or teens who like westerns and procedurals but aren't ready for the realness of Longmire. All in all, Wynonna Earp is a simple, young show with a lot of standard-issue fantasy and western tropes, nothing groundbreaking, but with a loooot less sexism, homophobia, or gendered violence than any other fantasy show on TV. The female characters who flirt with each other interact in realistically human and awkward ways (easy for a young lgbt kid to identify with) and the attraction between women on the show isn't exploitative or voyeuristic, it's just adorkably sweet (also so rare on TV.) The sister characters are kind to each other, and they value their family bond, even if they go through some rivalry and resentment over their troubled past-they show the power of redemption and forgiveness and personal growth in a family relationship. The show's most driven and most intelligent character, Waverly, is a femme/girly nerd who over the course of the show dates women and men, and this is awesome and super rare to see.

The men and women professional characters, such as marshals and sheriffs, treat each other as colleagues and equals-they have power struggles that are respectful. The cast are unusually racially diverse, and (as of S1ep5) resist negative stereotypes of color and gender. It gives off very YA (young adult) vibes, with the values and broad tone of a magical-girl anime show, and silly choreographed fight scenes to match. But it is a cute supernatural adventure in the (rural?) urban/occult fantasy genre. This show won't win any acting or writing awards.
